We call the top number the Numerator, it is the number of parts we have. We call the bottom number the Denominator, it is the number of parts the whole is divided into.

A fraction is a part of a whole.

Equivalent fractions have the same value, even though they may look different. To find equivalent fractions we multiply the top and bottom by the same number. If we divide the fraction by the same number then we simplify the fraction. To find the reduced fraction we need to calculate the decomposition of the numerator and denominator.
